Why does my car randomly lose power while I’m driving?
Sudden power loss can be caused by electrical interruptions, often linked to a failing alternator, compromised ground connection, or a short in the wiring harness. In many modern cars, if the ECU (Engine Control Unit) detects irregular voltage, it may limit power to protect the engine. This kind of issue can come and go, making it frustrating to diagnose without the right tools. It's important to get it checked, as electrical power cuts can disable fuel injection, ignition timing or throttle response—leaving you vulnerable in traffic.
How do I know if a fuse keeps blowing because of a bigger problem?
If a fuse blows more than once, it’s not just a one-off fault—it’s likely protecting the system from a real issue, such as a short circuit, overdrawn current or faulty component. Replacing the fuse repeatedly won't solve the problem and can eventually lead to more expensive damage. A diagnostic process will usually involve isolating the circuit, checking each connected component, and testing for resistance or current leaks. Blown fuses are often the symptom, not the root cause.
Can electrical faults cause my car to fail an inspection or rego check in NSW?
Yes. In New South Wales, vehicles undergoing pink slip inspections must have functioning lights, indicators, wipers and other essential systems—all of which rely on electrical circuits. If a tail light is flickering, a horn doesn’t work, or warning lights stay illuminated on the dash, you may not pass inspection. Even intermittent faults can cause delays or additional rechecks. It’s worth troubleshooting known issues before heading in for your safety check to avoid last-minute fails.
